"Why?" ... That is the question...
Since my daughter started talking the question has always been the same. Doesn't matter what we are talking about. "Why?" is going to be stuck in the conversation at some point. I don't mind answering my daughters questions. In fact, I'm amazed at her curiosity! Those big wide eyes eager for knowledge! But sometimes, that little three letter word can really get on your nerves and send you to your breaking point. If you're a mom, you know what I'm talking about. Let me set the scene for you... My kids and I are in the mall, a crowded mall. My daughter is walking next to me pushing the baby in the stroller when she spots a man in a wheelchair. "Mom, why is that man in that chair?" "Well sweetheart, some people have to use wheelchairs if they can't walk." Mind you, very crowded store, Christmas shopping, can barely hear yourself think. "Why?" "Maybe his legs are broken and he has to use the chair until they heal." "Why?" "Honey, walk next to us so you don't get lost. Can I ask you a question? Sometimes you ask Mommy 'Why' when I've already answered that question. Were you listening?" "Yes, but why?" "Ok let's just get what we need and get out of here." "Why?" I actually stop and look at her for a full 30 seconds. Really? I mean, she's grinning from ear to ear! "Alana you need to come up with a new word other than 'why'. Maybe you should keep quiet until you think of one." She loved the challenge. Almost immediately you could see the little wheels in her head start turning. We are finally leaving the mall and I turn to her and say,"Before we go home I've got to stop and get some gas." She looks up at me with those big beautiful eyes and says,"How come?" "What..?" "How come, Mommy? You told me to come up with a new word, well, I did, Mommy!" "Ok but that's not really what I meant, that still means the same thing as why.." "How come, Mommy?" .... I'm sure by now you're either laughing or you have quit reading. Oh my clever child. She'll be 4 in January but I've heard the "why" thing never ends, or in my case, the "how come"s!
